Just been for a brief flick on the Tongariro. Fished for around an hour and hooked only one. The odd other fish or two is being caught around the place. The water is still fairly coloured but becoming fishable at around 90 cumecs

After flooding a couple of days ago and showers of rain since David still managed a good days fly fishing on the Tongariro which stayed well above 60 cumecs for the day. David managed to land 8 out of 10 hook and plays and missed a definite 11th take where we actually saw the fish splash on the surface. There were a few other fish being caught around the place so the fishing overall wasn’t too bad given the river was flowing at over twice normal flow. David had a ball, and we covered quite a lot of water in the afternoon searching for pods of trout and eventually finding one area where we added several to the days already satisfactory talley to hit double figures on hookups – pretty good given the conditions. David wouldn’t allow my flies to be seen in any photos and refused my offer to take some back to try on the “Test”! They were just large salmon egg glow-bugs – not for English Chalk streams though!

Went for a short walk from my house an hour ago and am back again now so I guess it didn’t take too long to land a couple of 3 pound Rainbows in over 80 cumecs. Saw one other fisherman hook and land 1. The trout were recoveries and by no means fresh runs out of the lake. If we don’t get too much rain the Tongariro will be sort of fishable tomorrow at around 50 – 60 cumecs I would guess. Have been having reasonable good fishing in a few spots around the 50 cumec flow rate so fingers crossed for no rain.
