Explored a couple more areas of a nearby spring fed stream with Ross Novak today. Neither of us hooked any but I did manage a take on dry and Ross a couple of missed takes on Nymph in one section where we came across 4 brown trout in the 2 – 3 kilo range. It appears that the fish in this stream are hard to spot and few and far between but a fantastic average size. I suspect we missed a lot of fish as we rushed through exploring. After lunch we walked a kilometer on another stretch with fairly good visibility without seeing a trout! This is the reason why guides are so secretive about fishing spots and why when people send me emails asking me where they should go to fish there on the tour of New Zealand in a campervan I simply don’t reply to the emails. We spend a lot of time and money trying to find spots that are fishing well and on average 1 in 5 spots pays dividends.

Went fishing with my Alaskan friend Ross Novak today to a river that he hasn’t fished for a few years and I had never fished before. It was an interesting river and we hooked several fish around 2 pounds and 1 of around 3.5 pounds. Also had a few other missed takes. The river was great fun to fish and completely different scenery. I will use this river from time to time guiding.

Explored a few new spring fed streams today with my Alaskan friend Ross Novak. One stream was a winner with good numbers of brown trout feeding and though not easy fish, we managed to hook four and land 3. saw the biggest eel of my life at around 5 to 6 feet long which meant I stayed high up on the bank well away from the water though everyone tells me they are harmless – still hideous disgusting creatures!

Guided Mike Davies from England for the 2nd day today and chose an easier going farmland type river to save his recently injured knee from giving him any grief. The fishing was a little tough with an angler encounter on the river – struck other fishermen who decided to jump in the river 100 meters ahead of us – later claiming they didn’t realize we were fishing. They apologised and we amicably divided up the water and continued to hook a further 3 trout landing 1 of them which was this sight fished brown trout on dry fly which was the highlight to Mike for the whole trip, ahead of the 10 superb fish hooked yesterday nymphing. Mike had a great day and was very easy to guide being a very competent fly fisherman. Mike spends a lot of his retirement time fishing for Atlantic Salmon in England and Scotland and talking with him for two days about it has given be the urge to go there and give it a try one day soon.

A beatiful sunny day greeted Mike Davis from England this morning on a beatiful New Zealand back country river. The fishing was good as usual with Mike landing 6 out of 10 hooked of which the biggest was this 6 pound rainbow and 3 of the others landed were over 4 pounds. The walk up the hill and over the rocks was OK for Mikes injured knee but we may consider some easier terrain tomorrow.

Just got back from my holiday up North since boxing day. Went fishing and free-diving nearly every day of course. Caught a few snapper and crayfish then decided to return a few days early to guide tomorrow and avoid yet another day of sea-sickness!
