The orders for this trip were a little different. Pick up some Australians from staying on a hired 44 foot sailing cat from one of the Islands in the Morning and teach them how to fish for snapper and kingfish in the Bay. Step one was to catch live bait which was easy at about 500 meters from their sailing cat. The kinfish wern’t around any of my normal popper fishing spots so we headed out to Cape Brett were conditions were a little sloppy but it wasn’t long before we had a a couple of nice Kinfish on board and quickly left the sloppy conditions for calmer water inside the bay for a quick and successful snapper soft baiting lesson before heading back to the catermaran to clean the snapper for dinner.

After two big bust offs by big Kingfish the boys managed this beautiful eating pup Hapuka which could not be released because of its inflated swim bladder but served to make a nice meal along with two good sized John Dory.

Santa arrived early in the Bay Of Islands – and left us plenty of nice sized Snapper Christmas! Conditions weren’t looking great but the wind fell away nicely as we headed out, and our efforts were well rewarded with some fantastic soft bait fishing for snapper.

The run of Snapper continues – this time with a barracouda to add a little bit of variety to the fantastic soft bait fishing we have been enjoying on most trips lately.

Not fast and furious on the kingfish – though still 2 nice Kingfish around the 10 to 12 kilo mark were landed this morning by just one customer. One was on a live bait and the other on a jig.

It wasn’t fast and furious this morning on the Snapper but after circling the area known as the middle ground and arriving back at the bait schools right back where we started, we landed some excellent Snapper including this 19 pounder by Laurence.

It was a great morning out this morning with 4 fish over 10 pounds released and another half dozen slightly smaller fish kept for dinner to be shared among the half dozen customers this morning. There were 3 bust offs by monster snapper of unknown size and numerours other fish lost of course!
